Merit Badges for the Job Market

What if employers didn't care whether applicants held a college diploma but instead asked what educational "badges" they had collected? Like Boy Scout merit badges for professionals, these marks of achievement would show competence in specific skills, and they could be granted by any number of institutions. This is the vision of a growing number of education reformers who feel that the standard certification system no longer works in today's fast-changing job market.
New Certification for Complex Surgical Oncology

A new subspecialty certification in complex general surgical oncology aims to provide surgeons with training in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with complex cancers such as sarcoma, melanoma, and esophageal malignancies – and hopefully will attract surgeons who want to focus on research.
CUSON-Led American Board of Comprehensive Care Receives National Accreditation

The American Board of Comprehensive Care (ABCC), based at the Columbia University School of Nursing (CUSON), is an independent organization founded in 2007 for the purpose of certifying nurse practitioner graduates of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs who have met defined and accepted standards for comprehensive care. The ABCC Diplomate of Comprehensive Care (DCC) program and its certification exam have now been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
NCCPA Awards First Certificates of Added Qualifications

Recently 232 certified physician assistants (PAs) became the first to earn Certificates of Added Qualifications (CAQs) from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by meeting licensure, education and experience requirements and passing a specialty exam.

Fatality raised more questions about Kimberly Even's credentials as drug counselor

In the last year of his life, Chase Beh's parents had enlisted a drug counselor to help the 20-year-old deal with his increasingly self-destructive behavior. He died in 2009 of a heroin overdose while being counseled by Kimberly Even — a woman who had been warned to stop claiming she was a certified counselor by the professional organization that sets the standards for drug counselors, records show. The state also was investigating her credentials at the time of the death.
Exclusive: Doctors cheated on exams

For years, doctors around the country taking an exam to become board certified in radiology have cheated by memorizing test questions, creating sophisticated banks of what are known as "recalls," a CNN investigation has found.
The National Registry of Food Safety Professionals (NRFSP) has become the first and only food safety manager certification program to be accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) based on the ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 standard for conformity - general requirement for bodies operating certification of persons.
CITF Earns Certificate Program Accreditation
ICE is pleased to announce that the Carpenters International Training Fund (CITF) has achieved accreditation of its UBC Rigging and Signaler certificate program under ICE 1100: Standard for Assessment-Based Certificate Programs. CITF participated in the pilot accreditation program based on the 1100 standard that was published in 2009 and is the first program to have achieved accreditation.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), coordinator of the U.S. voluntary standardization system and a global leader in conformity assessment, is pleased to announce the accreditation of the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) under the Institute's Accreditation Program for Personnel Certification Bodies.
NCCCO Articulating Crane Operator and Rigger Level II Certifications Earn ANSI Accreditation
The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) announced today that it has been awarded accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for two of its newest certification programs. The CCO Rigger Level II and Articulating Crane Operator certifications are now accredited by ANSI to the ISO/IEC 17024 International Standard for organizations that certify personnel.
