Certification: Creating the World as It Should Be
(Certification Magazine) Certification programs try to identify individuals with a set of knowledge, skills and abilities that allow them to perform a particular role. Most try to align closely to prevailing practices in the field. But certification programs should aim higher and elevate practice in the field.
Plans Set for National Certification of Principals
(Education Week) After years of talk and stalled efforts, the creation of a national certification program for principals is finally under way, with plans to launch the initiative formally sometime in 2011.
Teachers Union Encourages National Certification
(timesfreepress.com) In recent years, Tennessee has lagged woefully behind neighboring states in the number of teachers who earn the highest professional education certification. So armed with a grant from the Tennessee Education Association, officials here are encouraging — and helping pay for — as many teachers as possible to earn certification from the National Board for Teaching Standards.
Licensing and Certification Standards for Personal Trainers
(Marketing-Biz) One complicated and controversial issue in fitness today is licensing and certification for personal trainers. A handful of state legislatures have introduced bills to establish personal trainer licensing or certification standards over the past two years. However, as of December 2009, none of these bills have yet been passed.
When Certification Fails to Deliver Career Transformation
(Certification Magazine) “I recently took a class that promised to get me my MCSE, with tutors, videos and online courses. They advertised that I would get a job without any experience. I still don’t have a job and haven’t been able to get my money back because I took the courses. Am I the only one?”
Certification Magazine's 2009 Salary Survey
(Certification Magazine) Fifteen months ago, the world watched in horror as stock markets plummeted, debt skyrocketed, banks collapsed and the credit industry imploded, plunging the global economy into the worst recession since the Great Depression. No one knew what the next day, week or month — let alone year — had in store.
Three Firefighters Accused of Certification Forgeries
(denverpost.com) Three firefighters, including former Sheridan Fire Chief Ron Carter, are charged with felonies related to the forgery of firefighter-training paperwork. Carter, Sheridan Fire Capt. Brian Ribble and Federal Heights firefighter Don Ogborn are charged with multiple felony counts of forgery, conspiracy and attempt to influence a public official. The charges were filed by 18th Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers on Thursday.
National Board Certification Program for Principals and 'Teacher Leaders' Launched
(Contra Costa Times) Although Northgate High in Walnut Creek is considered to be a good school, Principal John McMorris wants it to be a great school. He has created a "Focus on Learning" team of teachers and administrators that collaborates on curriculum, mentors educators and looks for student weaknesses — such as writing research papers — then brainstorms about how to remedy them.
Strata: Steppingstone to an IT Career
(Certification Magazine) The paradox appears on a regular basis in the business news headlines. Unemployment in the United States jumped to double digits in October for the first time in more than a quarter century, reaching 10.2 percent.
Nontraditional Teachers May Be In Mich.'s Future
(NPR) If you're a teacher in Michigan, odds are you went through a traditional teaching college. That's because the state requires nearly all elementary and secondary school teachers to get traditional training. But the promise of federal funds is pressuring Michigan to loosen those rules and allow teachers with alternative certification.
Should You Hire a “Certified” Social Media Consultant?
(The GigaOM Network) I recently got up on my soapbox on my personal blog and ranted about a new, pricey certification program that is being offered by a social media association that has recently cropped up, one of many that are claiming to be able to certify social media expertise.
ASTM To Add Certification Capabilities
(Dr. Dobb’s) The ASTM board of directors has authorized ASTM's management to develop the capability to offer certification services. Titled the ASTM International Certification Programs, the new initiative is sponsored by ASTM International and offers the opportunity for certification of products (materials, products, services and systems) as well as personnel.
ANSI Board Names Volunteer Leaders for 2010
(PR Newswire) The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Board of Directors announced today its new members and officers for the term beginning January 1, 2010. Arthur E. Cote, P.E., supported by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), was re-appointed for a second one-year term as ANSI's chairman of the Board.
National Certification for Medical Interpreters Launched in the US
(e-releases) Patients in the United States with limited English proficiency (LEP) continue to face language barriers that threaten their health and undermine their well-being. But they are one step closer to equitable healthcare with the launch of the first National Certification for Medical Interpreters in October 2009. A culmination of an over 23-year effort, this first-of-its-kind national interpreting standard certifies that those interpreting are tested and competent as “Certified Medical Interpreters” (CMIs).
Cisco Introduces New Telepresence Certs for 2010
(Certification Magazine) In a global business climate populated by organizations under pressure to keep costs low, telepresence is emerging as an increasingly significant chunk of communications in general. The telepresence market may reach $4.7 billion in revenue worldwide by 2014, predicts business research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan.
