The next NCCA deadline, September 30, 2009, is quickly approaching. If you’ve ever applied for NCCA accreditation you know that the process can be overwhelming. At a minimum you need a love for detail to fill out the application form and organize all the materials. Simple mistakes can lead to a deferral or denial decision. As popularity soars, teacher certification programs get more oversight from Texas
(Star-Telegram.com) When Nika Maples was nominated to be Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2006, some people told her a teacher who went through an alternative-certification program would probably be shut out of the prestigious award. But Maples, who has an undergraduate journalism degree from Texas Wesleyan University, had faith that the education community was more open-minded, and she was right. She won.

Court Nixes Suit Over Teacher Certification
(Courthouse News Service) The 9th Circuit dismissed a lawsuit claiming that the Department of Education lowered standards in poor and minority school districts by allowing underqualified teachers to be considered "highly qualified" under the No Child Left Behind Act.  The Act requires that students be taught by "highly qualified" teachers.

New Certification for Doctors in Obesity
(USA Today) Physicians will soon be able to become specialists in weight management, says Robert Kushner, president of the Obesity Society.

Will Teacher Certification Requirements be Changed?
(Examiner.com) Teacher opinion is divided on a proposal to speed up the teacher certification process to address teacher shortages in specific subject areas, according to the Detroit Free Press. The proposal is under consideration by the Michigan State Board of Education.

(The Journal) The state of Michigan is moving toward computer-based testing for teacher certification for the first time.   Michigan has awarded Pearson a five-year contract to continue managing the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) program. The contract will take effect in October.

Calls for Investigation into Test Credibility go Unanswered
(Gotham Schools) State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch is calling for state exams to be more “defensible,” but a study investigating test score credibility requested a year ago by the state’s testing oversight board has still not received a go-ahead.
