Home-schooling Parents Worry About Certification
(East Valley Tribune) Late last month, a California appeals court unexpectedly issued a ruling that essentially outlawed home schooling in that state unless the parent holds a teaching certificate.
Crist Endorses Crane Safety Bill
(MiamiHerald.com) With two cranes towering behind him on Friday, Gov. Charlie Crist toured the site of Tuesday's crane collapse in Miami, then endorsed a bill pending in the Legislature that would regulate the training and certification of heavy crane operators.
California Crane School Sues over Loss of Accreditation
(Sacbee.com) The California Crane School trains its students so well that 90 percent of them get certified on the first try, said owner John Nypl, and that's what killed his Grass Valley business. At least, that's what Nypl alleges in a lawsuit he filed against the agency that accredits crane schools, the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators, and a rival school, the International Assessment Institute.
State Worker Falsely Certified Crane Operators
(Newsday.com) A state employee has been removed from his job after investigators found he helped about 200 unqualified crane operators get certified in New York State between 1985 and 2000, according to an inspector general report.
Crane Training Vital for Safety, ASSE Member Says
(Occupational Hazards) Coinciding with the recent fatal crane incidents in New York City and Miami, American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) member and certified crane operator trainer Greg Peters noted that to avoid fatalities and injuries involving cranes and derricks, crane operators must receive comprehensive training and should be required to obtain national certification.
